Type Marsh Creation
The Breton Sound Basin, on the eastern coast of southeast Louisiana in St. Bernard and Plaquemines Parishes, has faced harsh storms and other land loss factors that have weakened the once-strong natural ridges and barriers and left small communities and population centers more vulnerable to storm surge.
The Breton Sound Landbridge projects incorporate marsh creation efforts to restore and strengthen these disappearing wetlands. By dredging the Mississippi and conveying sediment areas that have experienced rapid land loss, CPRA is able to reclaim the natural buffer that these wetlands create for southeast Louisiana. Marsh plantings and terracing projects add an additional layer of protection, fortifying the new land and making it more viable. The integration of these different types of projects in strategic locations within the Breton Landbridge creates a mutually reinforcing system.
